World Building

Constructed Language

Introduction

This article would overview on the concept of constructed, fabricated or artificial languages. It would also mull over the use of constructed languages in World Building efforts.

A constructed language or artificial language is a language that has been created deliberately. It is very unlike the natural languages which had taken ages to evolve - and they continue to evolve. It is not that the constructed languages do not evolve, but they do not evolve naturally - they are planned and designed by a person or group of people.

The full details of creation of a language is not provided in this article as it is a broader scope. But an attempt is made to mention all of the issues involved with artificial languages, so that the reader is aware of topics in order to do further studies.

World Building: A perspective from modern literature

Some would argue that World Building process is not required in modern literature at all. To some extent this argument holds its place but at least, the process does take place implicitly.

World Building

Synopsis

In most of the cases, the results of the efforts of World Building is very apparent, rather than the World itself. We all have seen the splendor of the story told in the Lord of the Ring series. We have been awed by the futuristic pictures detailed of the Star Wars movies and novels. These works were based on Worlds that were built by the process of World Building.

This article ventures on summarizing the various issues that go into building of such World. This statement does come with a disclaimer that it is not the first venture. World Building has been recognized as concept, arguably as an art-form, and many works exists on the process. This article attempts to have an exhaustive understanding of the basics and origin of World Building. This article would also touch up on application and try to categorize the Worlds built based on the approach used. This article is not a how-to-build set of instructions as that would be a series of paper in itself.

Maps in World Building - Continents of Pipurim

I had been involved with some world building activities for the Chaos And Order realm, when I started working on a map for the known world of Pipurim. Indeed, there has not been much work at that repository or at the role playing forums (update - forums removed), but I have been working on the world nevertheless.

Pasen: Grammer and Words

This post would brief on effect of grammar elements on the constructed language - and for illustration, I would take the language, Pasen, that would be used in the world of Chaos And Order.

The following two posts made earlier in the World-Building section are related:

Langauge creation: Proto-Pasen - Syllables

As I had discussed in my earlier post, I had started to create a language that would be the basis for at least a couple of languages that would be prevalent in the realm of Chaos And Order. (To know more about Chaos And Order, visit the forum or the blog).
