This is the fifth part of the series ‘CRAP Design Series‘. In this part we will be looking at the Contrast principle of the CRAP set of design principles. The principle states that if the two objects within an element are different, then make them really different. And also, two different elements should be having different design making them contrasting.

There are three approaches that Robin discusses in her book ‘Design Book for Non-Designer’.
I encountered this concept when I was browsing my usual haunt, AstaHost. I got inspired to do the work in Vector Art medium.
I sought Randy Hutchins’ permission, and he gladly gave it. And here is the translated version of his work - translated to vector art:

I had been involved with some world building activities for the Chaos And Order realm, when I started working on a map for the known world of Pipurim. Indeed, there has not been much work at that repository or at the role playing forums, but I have been working on the world nevertheless. Earlier, I had worked on a constructed langauge, Pasen, and now I thought I should work a bit on the actual world by making maps.

I had been making crude maps earlier, and the extent was only with respect to demarcation of the different countries and the areas occupied by the different races of the planet Pipurim. I thought, there would be some maps drawn by the inhabitants of a group of continents, at least to the extent how much they were aware off - if not at the full planetary scale. That made me look out for resources that would help be build the map.
This is the fourth part of the series ‘CRAP Design Series‘ where we will look into the ‘Repetition Design Principle’. The principle states that we should repeat design elements through out the piece (the webpage or the document). The elements that are repeated may be color, shape, texture or style.

Applying this design principle adds consistency to the webpage or document, and gives a cohesive design. It also helps in branding, when a particular piece is done under a specific brand.
