Collaborative Documents
April 25th, 2006 — VyomaLately, a development in document creation and authoring has taken place. Earilier to create a document, and if had to be more than the what the boring text editor packed with the operating system gave, one had to buy expensive software. There was another alternative - open source software. I do have a soft corner for open source, but I have to say that it has been really difficult for the open source software to taken on the strong hold maintained by the already established commercial software for one sole reason - file format.
But now, there are many other options that are emerging where one can create a document online. Ofcourse, one would need the internet connection, but in most of the areas a internet connection has become a status quo.
One such service is Writely. I had not come across this site earlier, but now it has been acquired by Google. I tried to register, but their homepage said that they were not taking new registrations yet, and I left my email ID there.
But I could not just wait for their mail to arrive at my inbox as I wanted to try out this concept. I looked (googled) around, and I found another service, which, I belive is similar to Writely. It is better or not, I am not sure, but I could register at it and try out: Zoho Writer

But the real advantage of being able to create a document online, but that more than one authors can work on the same document. Incidentally, Zoho Writer also allows one to import or export documents in popular file formats.
I am still waiting for Writely to send me a mail so I can check out their service too.
